PRESS RELEASE

SEQTA calls for the Queensland Government to subsidise AirTrain fares

Brisbane Airport AirTrain and terminal

This morning, the South-East Queensland Transport Association (SEQTA) is calling on the Queensland Government to subsidise Brisbane Airport's AirTrain service, bringing airport rail travel in line with Queensland's nation-leading affordable public transport network.

Despite the tremendous success of 50cent fares across the Translink network, passengers travelling to Brisbane Airport continue to face significantly higher rail fares due to AirTrain's private operating model. A trip from Brisbane Central to Brisbane Domestic Terminal costs around $23.30 per person before deals.

SEQTA notes the recent petition launched by Michael Berkman MP calling for lower AirTrain fares and welcomes broader discussion on improving airport rail affordability.

SEQTA believes affordable airport rail services would benefit both travellers and airport workers while encouraging greater use of public transport.

Imogen Buckley, Lead-Founder @ SEQTA
"Queenslanders have embraced affordable public transport. Airport rail should not be left behind", said Imogen Buckley, Lead-Founder of SEQTA.
Declan, Management Council @ SEQTA
"Time and time again public transit has been left behind due to high fare costs, and this is not a problem unique to Queensland. The 50 cent fare program was welcomed with open arms by the travelling public. Airport Rail is a vital link in our network and deserves to be subsidised.", said Declan, Management Council @ SEQTA
Scott, SEQTA Taskforce
"When a person can traverse South-East Queensland for fifty cents, a charge of more than twenty dollars just to travel to Brisbane Airport, simply doesn't add up as a cheap and efficient link for workers and domestic or international tourists", said Scott, a member of the SEQTA Taskforce.

SEQTA is calling on the Queensland Government to work with AirTrain to reduce fares and improve access to Brisbane Airport by rail.
