On January 28th, The South-East Queensland Transport Association alongside numerous officials from Brisbane City Council as well as members of the public sat on the first ever Metro service leaving from UQ Lakes. Nearly a full year later, a clear path forward for Brisbane’s metro system still hasn’t emerged. three-minute peak frequencies remain unachieved, with no announced timeline for true metro operations. meanwhile, we wait on business cases we’ve heard nothing about whilst 2032 is coming fast. Today, The South-East Queensland Transport Association are calling on the Queensland Government to commit to three new major transit projects to launch before 2031. Capalaba Metro, Indooroopilly Metro and Carseldine Metro.
Carseldine Metro
A transitway to Carseldine is being pitched by us, as a major boost for the north Brisbane transport network. If delivered well, it could fix many of the everyday challenges commuters face on the northside. Currently, the Northern Busway ends at Kedron Brook with a pretty sizeable unbuswayed gap between Federation St and Truro Street stations. We’re calling on Brisbane City Council and Queensland Government to: • Connect Federation Street Station and Truro Street Station via a grade-separated transitway • Extend the Northern Busway to Chermside and Carseldine by any means possible • Deliver on the Fitzgibbon Metro Depot election promise • Revitalise the Northern Bus Network through a true trunk-and-feeder model, with frequent suburban loops feeding a world-class Metro service Taking these steps would leave a lasting impact on northern Brisbane and go a long way toward fixing the long-standing issues in its bus network.
Indooroopilly Metro
We’re calling on the Government to negotiate with the University of Queensland to run transit lanes through the St Lucia campus, forming a new Western Busway. West Brisbane has endured endless traffic and poor public transport for too long. It’s absurd that our city has an entire bridge to serve a single stop on the busway. We propose extending Metro 2 to Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, creating a true trunk-and-feeder corridor through West Brisbane that eases traffic and gets more people into reliable Metro services.
Capalaba Metro
Redland City has long been a neglected, underfunded and missed region that is terrible for transport. For this reason we are calling for a Metro system to Redland City. We call this project, “RedlandsRapid”, a privately operated Metro fleet with a major overhaul of Redlands transport.
Our RedlandsRapid proposal would be delivered in two stages. Phase 1 (pre-2032):
- A transitway (Mixed bus-exclusive-lanes and busway) to “East Capalaba”
- Seven new Metro Terminals forming a 16-terminal high-frequency Metro system
- “Brisbane’s Eastern Overhaul” to boost suburban access along the Old Cleveland Road corridor
- A brand new joint bus/metro depot in far-east Brisbane
- A redrawn suburban network in west Redlands, integrating with the new Metro
Phase 2:
- Converting the Eastern Transitway to be over 90% separated busway
- Extending the transitway from Capalaba to Victoria Point and south to Redland Bay forming 7 new Metro Terminals
- Redland Cities biggest bus overhaul in history
If the Crisafulli Government is giving Birkdale an Olympic venue, then delivering this Metro system and the whole RedlandsRapid project is not optional, We believe it’s essential.
Statements from our Representative Team: “I am concerned by the lack of expansion plans with regards to priority transit infrastructure in the western suburbs. Travel times along Coronation Drive and Moggill Road often skyrocket due to congestion, with no viable alternative for commuters to reach destinations in much of the west.” - Coconut, SEQTA Representative for West Brisbane
“Both North-Brisbane and Redland City need these vital transport improvements to keep up with huge growth in their respective areas. We need to deliver the Metro expansions, and we need to deliver them quickly.” - Imogen, Lead Founder @ SEQTA & SEQTA Representative for Central Brisbane, Redlands and Acting-Representative for Gold Coast.
